In August, Respond to Racism was proud to present another student panel, moderated by Bruce Poinsette, discussing student concerns with the Lake OswegoSD SRO’s.

Many surrounding school districts have listened to student concerns and either removed student resource officers entirely or began to divest from having a police presence on campus. Why hasn’t the Lake Oswego School District followed suit? n

While many seemed fired up about RTR’s presentation on SROs two years ago, little action has followed.n

For our August 1 discussion, we will revisit the SRO discussion and speak with current and former students about their vision for public safety and how the discussions are SROs with the district have gone behind the scenes.

Sarah Al Qirem is a sophomore at Lake Oswego High School. She is part of the Respond to Racism Youth Empowerment Committee and other local organizations.

Peren Tiemann is a Lakeridge High School graduate and rising college freshman. They are a dedicated gun violence prevention and LGBTQIA+ rights advocate.

Samantha Jarquin is a senior at Lake OswegoHS, co-founder of the Latino Hispanic Student Union, member of YEC, and 2022-23 School Board Student Rep. She strives to better her community through listening to others and working together to create change!

Camryn Leland is an Lake OswegoHS alum. She recently graduated from the University of Oregon with Political Science and planning public policy and management degrees. She’s currently working as the permanent supportive housing supervisor for Homes For Good, the housing agency in Eugene, Oregon. Camryn also writes for RtR and is a member of the Black Professionals networking group in Oregon.
